Real Distractions... Blog #13

The day has come, students all around the world dress up for Halloween displaying their scariest sides to the outside world. Many teachers and administrators feel that costumes should be band in schools due to the fact that it’s a direct distraction to the immediate learning environment. Throughout this unit in Issues we have talked about what the main purpose of public school is and determined that public school is there to educate youth free of distraction. Unruly costumes serve as a direct distraction to the learning environment. For example at Lincoln Park high school in the city of Chicago, I conducted some research and found out that no student is allowed to dress up so that class does not get disrupted. This works better for the school and they offer and alternative celebration after school hours. "Learning time is too valuable, advanced placement classes don’t have time to waste days due to costume distractions" says Kramer a Deerfield high school social studies teacher. Now I don’t think that the spirit of Halloween should be taken away but rather offered after school at a dance or costume viewing session. During multiple classes toady I have been distracted therefore not attaining information due to crazy cool costumes. Yes some may argue that it’s fun but outside of school in the time and place for fun, school is there to educate the youth free of any distractions both verbal and expressive (clothing). What’s your view?
